Football betting guide: 1X2, handicap and over/under
Football has the widest choice of markets of any sport. These are the main ones, explained in plain words.
Match result (1X2)
Bet on the result after 90 minutes plus injury time: 1 is a home win, X a draw, 2 an away win. Extra time and penalties normally do not count unless the market says so.
Over/under goals
Bet on whether the total goals in the match are over or under a line, such as 2.5. Over 2.5 wins if there are three or more goals. Lines such as 2.5 have no push, because the total can never equal 2.5.
Handicap
A handicap gives one team a virtual head start. With a handicap of -1 on the home team, they must win by two or more goals for your bet to win. Lines can also be split (for example 0 / -0.5), which splits your stake between two lines. Read the market rules shown in the sportsbook.
Pre-match and live
Pre-match bets are placed before kick-off. Live (in-play) bets are placed during the match and prices move with the game. Live betting is fast, so do not rush.
Tips
Know the competition and the teams' form, but remember that football has many surprises. Decide your stake before the match, and never chase a loss with a bigger bet.
